It is pretty safe to say that we all have made our fair share of mistakes while in college. Whether it was sleeping in during a final exam or partying too hard after a big win, college is where you are supposed to make those mistakes…and learn from them. While I’ve made my own mistakes, I was not the starting quarterback for one of the top-tier college football programs in the country with the spotlight constantly hovering over me. You would think that amount of recognition would allow someone to correct their mistakes immediately, but apparently for the reigning Heisman Trophy winner, Jameis Winston, that has not been the case.
It was recently reported to ESPN that Florida State quarterback, Jameis Winston, is under investigation after being linked to the autograph authentication company that just popped Georgia running back, Todd Gurley, for signing autographs for payment. I understand that we all make mistakes, but seriously, what is wrong with the recent Heisman Trophy winners? Johnny Manziel couldn’t keep his mouth shut and now Winston can’t stay out of trouble. From sexual assault accusations and stolen crab legs to shouting obscenities in public and now possibly signing his John Hancock for money when the NCAA says it is forbidden, we have to wonder if this kid is really what we thought he was.
When Winston first took college football by storm during the 2013 season, we really didn’t know what to think. Another red-shirt freshman quarterback is excelling on the gridiron better than anyone else could imagine and he is doing it all with a smile. Due to his breakout season and confident attitude, some people were willing to put the sexual assault allegations from his red-shirt year in the past because it had been put to rest by Florida State. But just as we saw from Johnny Football, winning the Heisman didn’t mean that the questionable behavior was going to stop. Manziel acted like a spoiled kid and Winston stole crab legs and cursed into a crowd. Manziel signed autographs for payment, and apparently, so did Winston.
Winston may not be spoiled like Manziel is, but his invincible attitude is all the same. No matter what Winston does, his actions portray to us all that winning the Heisman and being blessed with the immense talent to play college football puts him above everyone else. Listen here Jameis, I have been humbled by many experiences in my life that have made me the man I am today. In no way am I perfect, but life lessons have taught me a thing or two and I suggest that you take a look at what you have done and realize that learning from your mistakes will make you a much more desirable human being than the spiral of disappointment that you have already created.
I believe that we are all given the same opportunity to succeed in life. Some are blessed with better talents than others, but the opportunity is all the same. Jameis Winston was given an opportunity to play college football and then pursue a life-long dream in the NFL, and even though he has celebrated success, it is his actions off the field that better shape up if he wants to make his next dream a reality.
