Let’s talk about last week. I messed up. I wrote the article late. Heck, I wrote the article Saturday morning while lying in bed, hungover after smashing some Rose. I was caught up at work (Sports betting doesn’t exactly pay the bills...yet.), drove down to North Carolina, and spent a beautiful weekend with friends.
So, I apologize, it won’t happen again, and I even made it up to you by giving you my Lock of the Week for the price of a simple pageview.
Last Week: 3-2
Miami (OH) @ Army
Saturday 10/20 | 12:00PM
ATS: Army -7.5
The Play: Army -7.5
I like to consider myself a bit of a numbers guy and in this one, the numbers are telling me that Miami (OH) is one of the better teams in the country at stopping the run and getting penetration up front. So why am I taking Army and laying the points this week? Easy answer, Miami (OH) has not faced a triple-option team all season and only have a week to prepare, they have a big conference game next week at Buffalo, and Army is no slouch and is playing some solid defense.
Lay the points as Army wins this one by double digits.
NC State @ Clemson
Saturday 10/20 | 3:30PM
ATS: Clemson -17.5
The Play: Clemson -17.5
There’s a reason why the spread is so high on a game featuring two undefeated teams. NC State has played one of the most favorable early season schedules after their matchup with West Virginia was cancelled due to weather. This spread should be closer to -21 or -22 and that’s exactly where this final will land.
Lay the points and watch Clemson once again prove that they are without a doubt the best team in the ACC.
Wake Forest @ Florida St.
Saturday 10/20 | 3:30PM
ATS: Florida State -10
The Play: Wake Forest +10
Both teams enter the weekend coming off a bye. I wouldn’t say this gives either team a strong advantage. Motivation will be the big difference maker in this one. Wake Forest was embarrassed by Clemson two weeks ago and will wants to prove that, that was a fluke game. They also smell blood in the water against a Florida State team who blew a lead to rival Miami two weeks ago.
Will Florida St. win this game? Most likely, as they are the far more talented team. But will they win by double digits? No.
Take the points and the Demon Deacons on the road.
Memphis @ Missouri
Saturday 10/20 | 4:00PM
ATS: Missouri -9.5
The Play: Memphis +9.5
Memphis features an explosive offense, which was on display last week as they almost upset darling UCF. Missouri is struggling in the SEC and it’s at the fault of their defense. Missouri is one of the worst teams in the country when it comes to keeping teams out of the end zone.
Also consider that this is an AAC team traveling to the SEC. All of the pressure is on Missouri. None on Memphis.
Take the points and don’t be surprised to see Memphis this one outright.
Oregon @ Washington State
Saturday 10/20 | 7:30PM
ATS: Washington State -3
The Play: Washington St. -3
Since Oct. 18, 2003, a Washington State flag has flown on the set of ESPN’s College Gameday. This is the first time College Gameday is visiting the Palouse. I’m not one to test fate. I wholeheartedly believe Washington State wins this one at home.
Washington State features one of the best pass defenses in the country. They’ll be able to slow the Oregon ariel attack and let the momentum on College Gameday lead them to victory.
Lay the points and take the Cougs in what should be a fun game.
Bray’s “I’m Sorry for Uploading Last Week’s Article Late” Lock of the Week
Ohio State @ Purdue
Saturday 10/20 | 7:30PM
ATS: Ohio State -12.5
The Lock: Purdue +12.5
Ohio St.’s big win in Happy Valley doesn’t look as impressive a few weeks later, but much more important than the outcome, that game showed that if you can pressure the Buckeyes, Dwayne Haskins appears human. The Boilermakers will be able to pressure Haskins all night and will be able to score on the Buckeyes.
A part of me wants this action on the Money Line, but I’d play it safe and just take the points.
Another week and another successful slate of picks has passed us by, and it’s time for us to reach back to the top-shelf for out libations this week. In the words of Ron Burgandy, “I love scotch…scotchy, scotch, scotch…here it goes down…down in my belly….mmm, mmm, mmm.”
For the Winners: It’s time for you all to get acquainted with James Bond’s favorite single-malt…the Macallan. The 12-year bottling is one damn fine entry into this high-end world and it won’t disappoint. (Maybe, just maybe, if Bray ever hits one of those $5 parlays, I can sweet talk him into buying me the Macallan 18…but that’s for another time.) At any rate, don’t do anything crazy here. Add a few drops of spring water or a small ice cube to open it up, sit back, put your feet up, and enjoy.
For the Losers: For those of you who require a little more budget friendly option, go ahead and pick up a bottle of Lauder’s, pour a wee dram, grit your teeth, and get through it. There’s not much that can be done to save this one. It’s rough, but you deserve it for getting a little too confident with your picks. (If you’re ever been to a wedding with a low-end open bar…you should end the friendship right away…trust me…it’s not worth it.)
